Jean d’ Arras’s Mélusine (c. 1387)-or Historia de la linda Melosina, in its Spanish translation-was a best-seller of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Jean d’ Arras’s narrative tells the story of the fairy Melusine, her union with her mortal husband, Raimond, their building up of the House of Lusignan, their line and their conquests. The conflict of Mélusine centers around Raimond’s promise to never see Melusine on Saturday when she was secretly transformed into a serpent from the waist down. His breaking of that promise causes Melusine’s metamorphosis into a purely fairy state, her departure from the mortal world, and the eventual downfall of the House of Lusignan as a result.

The text by d’ Arras is based on orallegend and folklore as well as on documents and books at the disposal of d’Arras, librarian to Jean, Duke of Berry, from the latter’s rich holdings. The narrative of Melusine and Lusignan, with its themes of passion and tragedy, of fairies and supernatural metamorphosis, of battles and court life and kingdom building, all make for a compelling tale which was a favorite of the Middle Ages. With its realism, as well as mystery, the text resembles, on the one hand, the fifteenth-century chivalric romances, such as Tirant lo Blanch, with intricate detail of courtly customs, life and military strategy, and, on the other, earlier books, such as Amadis, with reference to chronicles, ages past, and cruel beings (i.e., Endriago and Orrible) who need be destroyed.

The purpose of d’Arras in writing the romance, as he so states in the prologue, is to tell the history of Lusignan, which at the time was held by the Berry family. The period in which d’Arras was writing was a turbulent one in France, and the control over Lusignan and the territories of the Duke of Berry changed significantly, especially during the Hundred Years’ War. It was important for the Duke to establish his patrimony over Lusignan, which he acquired in 1369. Jean d’ Arras took up the request of his patron to authenticate Berry’s claim to Lusignan, which House, since the early fourteenth century, had found its territories and prestige in a state of decay and loss. Thus, d’Arras, supported by the Duke of Berry and the House of Lusignan, had a specific purpose for writing Mélusine beyond that of literary creation or entertainment of the reading public.
